History was my favourite lesson at school and the Tudors have always been my favourite part of British history. Henry VIII and his six wives are popular with authors and there’s a whole publishing industry around that period of British history.

Here’s a few of my favourites and are well worth a read:

Hilary Mantel‘s trilogy about Thomas Cromwell (more on him in this month’s For the Love of Books round-up).

The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory: This is my favourite of all Gregory’s Tudor novels (and she’s written a fair few) and focuses on the life of Mary Boleyn, Anne’s older sister.

The Shardlake series by C.J. Sansom: I’m not usually a fan of mysteries, but these are brilliant! {The first book in the series came to my attention in 2011 when The Brainy One won a box of books.}

  1. I loved The Other Boleyn Girl even though I’m not normally a fan of historical novels. Funnily enough my son was talking about reading Wolf Hall at the weekend.
    I’ve not heard of the Shardlake series but will pop over to the link you’ve given to have a look!

  2. I thought Wolf Hall was brilliant – I’m sure your son will enjoy it. I’ve just finished the latest Shardlake – Tombland – very enjoyable. Give them a go!

  3. Thanks for the book recommendations. Anne Boleyn is my most favourite historical person. I have several history books on her along with several novels. I have the first of Wolf Hall on request at the library. I did watch the BBC series Wolf Hall last year, which was a bit slow at first (for me) but picked up.

    1. I agree about the TV adaptation of Wolf Hall – I didn’t think Mark Rylance was right for Thomas Cromwell, but I did enjoy Damian Lewis as Henry VIII.
