Since 1673 Chelsea Physic Garden has occupied four acres of land on the edge of the River Thames in London’s Chelsea. First established by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries in order to grow medicinal plants, this extraordinary garden has had wide reaching impact around the world.

The Chelsea Physic Garden is London’s oldest botanic garden (and second oldest in the UK, after the one in Oxford) and contains a unique living collection of around 5,000 different edible, useful and medicinal plants that have changed the world.

The Chelsea Physic Garden is a complete delight, one of London’s hidden gems. We were there for 2 hours, enough time to walk around the garden three times and to enjoy a cuppa with cake in the stylish café.

The Chelsea Physic Garden is somewhere I can see us revisiting, especially with green-fingered friends. If you happen to be in West London and have a few hours spare, then I recommend you spend them here.
It looks like a lovely place to spend a couple of hours – it’s fascinating how many hidden edible or medicinal qualities plants can have, Mother Nature is so clever.

What a fabulous place to have discovered. I wonder if today’s modern pharmacists haven’t made this place a must visit to pay homage to those early pioneers in medicinal healing gifts from nature. To add to the pleasure, a cafe serving tea & cakes – it’s perfect. I must now go visit the website to find out more about our rather Egyptian looking friend standing guard.
