A friend and I recently treated ourselves to a fashion-themed Afternoon Tea at the Berkeley Hotel in London’s Knightsbridge. If I’m honest, the dessert part of the Tea was more than a little disappointing – in flavours, rather than in presentation.
The savoury element was absolutely delicious – finger sandwiches and duck profiteroles. The salad-looking thing in the bowl was a combination of red and yellow cherry tomatoes, and thinly sliced baby cucumber and onion, all dressed in a light vinaigrette.
Truth be told, I was there simply so I could say, “Bring me the head of Anna Wintour!” And having bitten a chunk out of Anna’s famous bob, I found her rather bland. 🙂
I took the strawberry mousse on sponge layers home for The Boy and he practically inhaled it. The green cake was supposedly pistachio and it was horrible! The white chocolate flower was lovely. 🙂
The scones were served still warm and were deliciously light (I took the leftover scones home). The chocolate mousse was large enough to share – neither of us enjoyed it. The chocolate mousse was far too rich for our tastes and the sponge under the coconut was heavy and tasteless. (My friend boxed up the leftovers for her university-aged son. 🙂 )
This reads as though I spent the whole time at Afternoon Tea complaining, but that wasn’t the case at all. Both my friend and I enjoy the opportunity to sit in elegant surrounding for a few hours with nothing to do except chat, drink tea out of bone china cups and eat finger food that we haven’t prepared for ourselves.
We’re already thinking about Afternoon Tea at Claridge’s in December …
