On a wet afternoon during the recent half term, The Boy and I headed into Marylebone and The Sherlock Holmes Museum. The two of us made up half of the total numbers of visitors. 🙂
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson lived at 221b Baker Street from about 1881-1904. Apartment 221b was on the first floor of a lodging house, the landlady of which was a Mrs. Hudson. The first floor study which Holmes and Watson shared was at the front of the house and Holmes’ bedroom was at the rear, adjoining the study.

Dr. Watson’s bedroom was on the second floor next to Mrs. Hudson’s room; these rooms are used today as exhibit rooms.

The Museum suits everyone – those with little knowledge of Sherlock Holmes, those who know a great deal and those who consider themselves experts – but in truth, I found it a little disappointing. We were in and out within 20 minutes. There’s no mention at all of the classic black and white films or even the hugely popular BBC series.
In short, I’m happy that I’ve been to the Museum but have no desire to ever revisit.
What a fun adventure. There seems to be a lot to look at in those rooms. Thankfully(?) there was too many of you touring, so you could spend longer looking at all the details. Did the tour inspire TB to want to read the Sherlock books?
I don’t think I’ve ever read the Sherlock & Watson books, but I certainly watched the BBC series with Benedict & Martin. I would have liked more of the character Molly. The American series, called Elementary, was a fairly good take on the Sherlock & Watson characters; Watson was cast as a woman played by Lucy Liu.
Happy Weekend

TB hasn’t show any interest in reading any of the stories, but he does have a CD set of radio plays that he can recite almost verbatim. 🙂

What a shame it was a disappointment. But good to be able to say that you have been! I really enjoyed the TV series with Benedict Cumberbatch – Una Stubbs played Mrs Hudson so well.

I must admit to not really being a fan …

We visited the museum years ago (as we were staying right down the road at the Sherlock Holmes Hotel). We took a great picture sitting in those two chairs in your first photo by the fireplace – it’s one of my favorites. It was a small museum, but FUN to see the bits & pieces from the books … if you knew what to look for. I didn’t, but Robbie did. LOL

The sitting room was my favourite so much to look at!
