I mentioned recently that I’d put together a mixtape (on Spotify) from a list of songs mentioned in a romance novel.
Many of the songs I knew, but some I didn’t. As the playlist is supposed to tell the story of Nico’s love for Elizabeth, I imagine that Penny Reid, or someone who works for her, spent a lot of time of time researching which songs to include. Whoever complied the final list did a superb job.
I think that if you search for Nico Moretti’s Playlist on Spotify, you should find it on my account. For those of you who don’t use Spotify, here’s the full playlist:
- Where Do I Begin? by Shirley Bassey
- Swing Life Away by Rise Against
- I’ve Got a Crush On You by Frank Sinatra
- My Best Friend’s Girl by The Cars
- Mr. Brightside by The Killers
- What Sarah Said by Death Cab For Cutie
- The Scientist by Coldplay
- Everlong by Foo Fighters
- Wild Horses by The Sundays
- One by U2
- Criminal by Fiona Apple
- Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis
- Again by Janet Jackson
- I Think That She Knows by Justin Timberlake
- Let’s Get It On by Marvin Gaye
- Let’s Stay Together by Al Green
- Save The Last Dance For Me by The Drifters
Track two is a new favourite for me and makes me want to live in a house that has a porch with a swing seat on it. Track six is emotionally brilliant – the lyrics are unexpected and pack a punch.
The Marvin Gaye and Al Green tracks would be my choice too and Mr Brightside is one of my absolute favourites, I used to have it on a cassette in the car (showing my age now!) and it was one of those guaranteed to make me sing along at the top of my voice!

We still have a few cassettes and a stereo system that can play them! 🙂 Who didn’t love a song coming to an abrupt end because you’d run out of tape.

Thank-you for taking the time to do all this for those of us not on Spotify – that looks like a lots of interesting listening. I’ve always wanted a porch with a swing seat too; love those inside/outside spaces :).

Like book lists, I enjoy music lists. There’s a few songs that I listen to on repeat because the words speak of my life at the moment that song is first introduced – our life chapters by lyics.

Musical memories are one of the ways we remember the stories of our lives. 🙂
