The Dog-Walking Playlist

When I’m out by myself with Tilly, I tend to take my iPod Mini with me and set it to shuffle. It hasn’t been updated for quite a while …

You’d think that shuffle equated to random, but the same handful of songs seem to pop up each and every time … and what they have in common is that they are great to belt out as you walk laps of the park (assuming that you’re not against singing out loud when walking your pooch …):

Sovereign Light Café by Keane: I love, love, love this song. Even though the locations in the song are in Bexhill-on-Sea, it reminds me of my home town.

Live it Up by Mental as Anything: This song featured on the soundtrack of Crocodile Dundee and it reminds me of Saturday night NAAFI Bops (discos) in Germany in the late 1980s.

Northern Lights by Renaissance: A ’70s pop classic – the band’s only hit single, reaching number 10 in the charts in 1978.

Shut Up and Dance by Walk the Moon: A perky, fun pop song. You will find yourself singing along, regardless of whether you’re walking your dog.

Sunshine on Leith by The Proclaimers: The opening lines make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up – “My heart is broken, my heart is broken, my heart is broken. Sorrow, sorrow, sorrow, sorrow …”

November Rain by Guns n’ Roses: This reminds me driving back across the border into Germany from an evening out in the Netherlands with my siblings and The Brother’s pal. Said pal was driving, driving at speed, and we had a near miss with a pedestrian who’d stepped into the road …

Do you listen to anything when out with your pooch? Podcast recommendations welcome. 🙂

  1. There are some songs I could listen to over & over. My fur girls would be greatly opposed to a leash, walking outside & definitely would cringe should I try to sing! Currently I’m working on a playlist I am calling my COVID Concert Playlist – songs that could be an anthem for living the pandemic life!

  2. Well, that’s been a lovely half-hour, following your links and listening to music, some of which was new to me – thank-you! Currently, I find the following mood-shifters: Pharell’s ‘Happy’, “It’s another day of sun” from the film La La Land, and (not everyone’s taste) gypsy jazz – we saw Lulo Reinhardt (great-nephew of the famous Django) in concert a few years ago and loved the energy. Great for a brisk walk!

  3. What a good idea to have a dog walking playlist! Isn’t it great how a song can stir up so many memories? Paul and I have very different musical tastes, I tend to list to very upbeat happy mood songs and love something I can sing along with, he prefers to sit quietly and listen to more instrumental music. I guess he’s more a listener and I’m a ‘joiner-in-er’!
