Life in Lockdown | Finding the Fitness

I’ve always walked Tilly twice a day, sometimes more, so it was obvious fairly early on in Lockdown that walking her once a day wouldn’t be enough to make up for all the swimming I wouldn’t be doing. I also knew that I wasn’t going to be able to do anywhere near the amount of walking in general that I’m used to. My daily step count wasn’t likely to reach anywhere near the recommended 10,000 steps per day. I needed something else to fill the fitness gap.

Pilates and bespoke socks

I tried Ballet Barre and I tried The Dutch Friend’s Pilates class. I did them. I enjoyed them. They weren’t me. I came across an Instagram account called Pilates At Your Desk and quickly became a fan – ten minutes of stretching has become something I do daily and I’ve been pleasantly surprised at just how much my body has loosened up in a short space of time. But I still hankered after something with a little more impact …

Step Aerobics – retro fitness

I decided to use the money I would ordinarily spend on my monthly gym membership on a Reebok Step – an early birthday present to myself. (Mine is similar (but cheaper) to this one.) I googled beginners step aerobics class and found Jenny Ford on YouTube.

And almost 26 years since I last took a Step class, I stepped for 30 minutes … and I loved it. Bring on the next class … and the one after that … and the one after that …

I know that the lovely Deb is using Zoom to keep up with her Zumba classes during Lockdown; what are you doing to maintain your fitness levels right now?

  1. Isn’t it interesting how many different ways of exercising there are to be found on the internet. Good luck with the stepping, I bet you’ll soon have those step counts over and above your pre-lockdown levels!

    1. I’m three step classes in now … if only my leggings had a pocket in which to stash my phone in order to record all those steps! 🙂

  2. I’m cheering you on. Step Classes! ? I must check this out. I have been trying to keep up with my Yoga & Pilates along with walking. I never thought I would say how much I am missing my “Use It of Lose It” fitness class, even the instructor’s leg warmers & her never ending 80’s music.

  3. Way to go keeping up with the exercising & finding what works for you.

Unfortunately, I’ve been terribly remiss with my exercise, despite having a stationary bike & a step & videos & great sidewalks in our neighborhood (& of course all kinds of online access).
