31 Things: Day 13

Day 13 of Ali’s latest class at BPC ~ 31 Things.  Ali describes the class thus: 31 Things is about capturing life right now but will be much more in-depth on a single daily subject than the documentation you might be used to with projects like Week in the Life or Project Life. This workshop is an opportunity to get specific pieces of your story told with the simple goal of telling more.
Day 13| Chores:
The bulk of household chores fall to me, as I’m not currently working outside the home.
I’m lucky in that when I married The Brainy One I inherited a weekly cleaning lady.  She may have changed shape over the last seven years, but every Friday morning still sees the arrival of two Ukrainian ladies who clean through the house in two hours.
Running the Dyson around, cleaning up in the bathrooms & downstairs toilet and sweeping the kitchen floor are done as and when required.  With a 5-year-old and a dog in the house, I keep on top of things between the weekly visits from the cleaning ladies.
I make the beds in the morning, usually before we leave the house on the school run.  The Brainy One’s idea of a made bed does not match mine and it’s not uncommon for me to remake a ‘made’ bed.
I change the beds on Thursday, with the idea being that the bedding is washed and ironed before the weekend.
Laundry is done several times a week and I try to keep on top of the ironing, preferring a little and often to a marathon session.
I’m extremely tidy and like things to be in their proper place.  The Boy Child knows that at the end of the day his toys have to go back to the playroom. My scrap booking supplies stay in my office.  The Brainy One has been known to say that he can never find anything but in reality he also likes a tidy and clutter free home.
The Boy Child already has two chores of his own ~ putting his toys away and making sure his dirty clothes go in to the laundry basket.  I’m thinking of adding bed making to his list.
My parents were tidy, Dad particularly so.  Mum still declutters on a regular basis.  All those years in the RAF also helped to install a high level of tidiness in to me.
Since we’ve been married, all rooms in the house, apart from the living room, have been redecorated.  The lounge is on the list for this summer.

  1. These prompts are really getting you to think through little everyday parts of your life ,aren't they? A cleaning lady sounds like a great plan

  2. I love the way you're dealing with all Ali's prompts and the insight it gives us into your daily life. I do wish I was as tidy as you – I love the idea of an immaculate house but, unfortunately, don't think I'm ever likely to live in one. Four cats and a dog probably don't help! xx

  3. TE's version of bed making is different to mine as well!
We had cleaning help for a period of time, 6-10 months, after each of the children were born, it made a huge difference and it is certainly easier to keep on top of things when you know you have help coming in at the end of the week!

I need to take a leaf out of your book re the ironing … I'm a marathoner and I do think it would be a less onerous task if I did a little every other day!

  4. I don't iron and these days rarely vacumn – kids do that 'cause of my back. We declutter regularly too but still have lots of stuff. I really like this self portrait – seeing the model/make and the old decor will be fun in later years.
